Special piercings for specific body areas
In order for the body jewelry to be integrated into certain skin and body parts, the skin and the underlying fat and cartilage tissue must be pierced. The English term "piercing" for this body modification was derived from this process, although it was not coined until the 1990s.
The different areas of the body such as the head, upper body, intimate areas or the body surface and their individual parts such as eyebrows, lips, ears, nose, belly button, nipples or any flat surfaces have different requirements for the type of jewelry construction as well as the piercing methods due to their natural nature. A related, but different, trending method is implanted piercings such as the dermal anchor (single-point piercing) or the skin diver, which are implanted into the skin using an anchor integrated under the skin. These implanted piercings are often used to decorate various body surfaces (neither convex nor concave in shape) and, above all, to accentuate tattoos.
Suitable types of materials for piercings
Piercing jewelry can be made from different materials. However, a distinction must be made between a first piercing and a permanent piece of jewelry, as not every type of material can be used as first jewelry immediately after piercing (as required by law!). This includes materials that contain more than 0.05% nickel. If nickel enters the body through a fresh and unhealed piercing wound, it can lead to allergic reactions, physical damage and poisoning.
For the initial piercing or for the initial jewelry that is used during the healing phase, the piercing materials that come into consideration are titanium, niobium, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), bioplast (PMFK) and implantanium, a special surgical steel with a nickel content of less than 0.05 percent. Materials for permanent jewelry, i.e. for piercing areas that have finally healed, can be the same materials as for the initial jewelry, as well as gold, stainless steel, plated, acrylic, bioflex (made of PTFE) and natural materials such as wood, bone, ivory, horn and amber.
